Janus 2019-2020
2019 has been
marked by significant anti-government protests on all continents. Some are
driven by the establishment whilst others are driven by left-wing agitators. We
have seen vivid pictures from Algeria, Bolivia, Britain, Catalonia, Chile,
Colombia Ecuador France, Guinea, Haiti, Honduras, Hong Kong, Iraq, Lebanon,
Pakistan and the sorry list continues. We have also seen the protests in
Melbourne and last week in Sydney, the massacre in Christchurch, suicide
bombings, school killings in the US…. In many of these there is not a right and
wrong answer but simply intolerance that someone can have a different view -
almost to the degree that if you don’t support me you’re against me and this
gives me the right to be violent against you. This has been the logic of many
of the animal rights groups around the world.
In Australia we have seen “The Extinction Rebellion” movement attempt massive civil disruptions blocking roads and having been dealt with swiftly and with no quarter given once access to the Melbourne and the Sydney’s major road were blocked. This received almost zero publicity.
In Singapore one of my favourite spots is Speakers Corner in Hong Lim Park. It is just on the edge of the banking area. Whilst created only in 2000 it is symbolic of a spirit of free speech which many of its neighbours need. For me it is where people can say what they think – not be violent but say we think. This is the essence of democracy. It says much about Singaporean society.
We have been very concerned about events in Hong Kong and concerned by violence as a means of messaging. I was reading about the reaction of the Hong Kong police and the publicity about their use of tear gas. Despite what the media has said the HK police has used about 6,000 tear gas shells in 6 months, yes it sound a lot until what I was next told that the Paris Police used more shells in 1st day of the Yellow Jacket protests. Sorry, both are sad. We need a more tolerant world and rational debate.
In both Australia and Singapore, we can see communities which come from many and diverse lands in both we see institutionalised community efforts at bringing diverse people into a single family. In Australia we sing I Am Australian[1]:
We are one, but we are many
And from all the lands on earth we come
We share a dream and sing with one voice:
I am, you are, we are Australian
I am, you are, we are Australian.
The business activities of Projects RH (www.projectsrh.com.au) & Tabatinga (www.tabatingasg.com) are anything but routine as we are engaged in corporate treasury style advice and in the case of Tabatinga with a clear focus on renewable energy internationally. We are currently working with 3 companies who are preparing for IPO’s in Australia and one in Singapore over the next 18 months. Our lives are peppered with business opportunities from Brazil to Cyprus on a daily basis. We in turn need to speak to people in the UK, US, Canada and Europe too. All sounds exciting until you live it. All
We need all develop our own coping mechanisms which for me include exercise, meditation, diet and giving thanks. The people at Projects RH and Tabatinga too each need way of focusing.
Throughout this year we have been told by the media that our economy and that of the region is about to go into recession. Singapore and Australia, plus many countries in the rest of the world, have suffered as a result of America’s reaction to the rise of China. Increasingly as I read the trade statistics, I am seeing more and more countries reporting China to be their largest trading partner. Recently I saw this included Japan. It means that our nation’s security alliance is different to restrain partnerships.
We attended the Belt and Road Summit again this year in Hong Kong. It was a wonderful opportunity to get an insight into what is going on with the rest the world, China’s impact on the rest the world but most importantly to connect again with friends. It is important to understand the countries and people don’t see things the same way and that we sometimes need to stand in the other person’s shoes and see the world from their perspective. For five months we have been working on what the face of it is a very simple transaction however for those involved if they get it wrong it could be career destroying. We have had to accept lots of WhatsApp messages and late-night phone calls. Our friends in China are walking in waters they have not traversed before. Our success in this project in the end will be attributable to one person - a mutually trusted banker whom Carmenza and I met first in 2016 and we have remained in communication with since. His willingness to assist shows the importance of relationships in most of the world. In the Western culture there is a clear demarcation between businesses who are relationship driven and those who are transaction driven. Except around the GFC businesses which are considered to be transaction driven have been considered to have been more successful. Projects RH and Tabatinga have always been relationship driven with a clear focus on integrity, honesty and transparency. I’m not sure if it’s cultural or learned. Carmenza and Paul both worked in businesses which prided themselves as being part of the community and having a strong relationship with their clients. It works for us and we are not going to change our values and beliefs.
A rule for all seasons – be receptive to change. Discontented turning speak of the Even when we are busy we need take time to grow and renew. A good business / personal model is SMART:
On a daily basis we each need to think how can we do what we do a little smarter. About a month ago I met Eric Behanzin the French management thought leader at a NSW Chamber of Commerce function. In his book 12 Days he says
A vision is clearly qualified and quantified:
Specific (clear, concrete, precise)
Measurable (have I succeeded or not)
Attractive (I like the objective)
Realisable (it only depends on me)
Temporal (it has a time limit)
I think of what does Tabatinga Pte Ltd (www.tabatingasg.com) see itself as:
1) An international promotor and packager of renewable energy projects
2) It will facilitate the financing of 3 projects in 2019.
3) We use best proven environmentally friendly technology
4) Carmenza and I supply the direction
5) The business model will be reviewed 31-12-19.
Projects RH does see itself as different (www.projectsrh.com.au) an Australian focused advisory group assisting Australian businesses like a corporate treasurer would and assisting parties who wish to invest.
Tabatinga passes the ”vision” test. Thanks to Carmenza’s drive it should focus on renewable energy.[1] 1987 - Bruce Woodley, The Seekers and Dobe Newton, The Bushwackers.
