2020 – Sustainably Powered Lives

Image
Sustainable renewable energy will be a clear pillar of the post Covid 19 world. Whilst the oil majors cut their dividends and reduce capital expenditure their investment in renewable energy has been ring fenced. This ongoing change within the oil majors demonstrates that they have both a pragmatic streak and continue to think long-term. Most were early investors in solar energy but its time was not ready. They next moved in and out of coal, pure retail and car maintenance. Today they are currently focused on gas but must be cutting their investment in new gas projects. At a time when they are focused on the image at both the community and shareholder levels their leadership in renewable energy should be welcomed. Their investment will drive technology resulting in many projects for others that do not meet their investment criteria which include size. 2020 to need to be a substantial year for solar and other renewable projects. The investment majors will continue to see the prices of so...

Power Stability in Australia

Image
Background The Liberal / National party coalition had been in power, in Australia, since 2013. Tony Abbott’s Views on energy policy cost him his job as Prime Minister in 2015 to Malcolm Turnbull and then caused Turnbull to lose the top job to Scott Morrison in August 2018. Abbott had a very clear vision of Australia remaining a low-cost energy country using the vast reserves of high-quality coal which the country has. Turnbull had almost the opposite view of the world wanting to transform Australia into a new low carbon high-tech economy. Scott Morrison emerged, almost like a character out of the BBC’s Yes Prime Minister, as the compromise candidate who sat in the middle and could heal a party after the philosophical wars between Abbott and Turnbull. The problem is, no decisions have been made since August 2018 despite Morrison receiving an unexpected healthy victory at a national election in May 2019. Yes, he and Minister Angus Taylor have held lots of consultations – but no...

AUSTRALIA: SINGED AND SOGGY; BUT NOT SCORCHED AND DROWNING

AUSTRALIA: SINGED AND SOGGY; BUT NOT SCORCHED AND DROWNING Let´s talk resilience in the time of floods, bushfires, and virus Living in Australia you are not exempt from what happens in the environment. Australia is a vast land, exceeding 7.6 million km²; it is a land of droughts and floods, but also rich, diverse and strong. This year we had unprecedented bushfires and unprecedented floods. Yet we Australians pride ourselves on winning against the odds and adapting to extreme weather. That is who we are; that is what we do. Also, this year the world lives with CorVid-19. There is no need to go into the details of the ramifications and political, economic, social, and human effects this will have on all of us. Yet, we are fortunate because when it is winter in North Asia it is summer in Australia, and as such the life of the virus and a chance of infection is less. Also, we are lucky to have top-notch scientists working on a cure; it was an Institute at the University of M...

HOW MECHANICAL SHOULD YOUR CONSULTANT BE?

HOW MECHANICAL SHOULD YOUR CONSULTANT BE? Another Frequently Asked Question, by Paul Raftery At Projects RH we do pride ourselves on knowing that each client is special and known by the relevant team members. In dealing with clients with similar issues it would be remiss of us not to build checklists and to process map what needs to happen. A case in point is our part in the investment visas application process. I also guess that in having an engineer for a CEO requiring to find processes and monitoring performance against these almost goes without thinking. Our processes need to be well developed to show we can give the client the level of service they deserve.  Having defined processes and checklists enables us to readily respond to the queries of our clients but more importantly to monitor their progress before there is a query. This is especially important as Projects RH, via its strategic alliance partners, process manages much of the activities. Nevertheless, o...

Australia singed and soggy; but not scorched and drowning

Living in Australia you are not exempt from what happens in the environment. Australia is a vast land exceeding 2.7 km² it is a land of drought and a flood but also rich diverse and large. This year the world lives with corona-virus. We are fortunate and when it is winter in North Asia is summer in Australia and as such the life of the virus and a chance of infection is less. It was an Institute at the University of Melbourne who first cracked the virus code and gave it is the world. The University of Queensland is one of the three global centres collaboratively working on a vaccine. Australia will rebuild the damage caused by fire and flood. This is our culture and our spirit. The bushfire season in Australia this year has been particularly bad. The area of Australia effected is about the size of Scotland. Scotland fits into Australia 98 times. China is Australia’s most significant trading partner taking 30% of our exports and providing 18% of our imports. Our exports t...
